How much does a DBS Check cost?
When applying for a DBS check through an Umbrella Body, the total cost usually has two parts.
The first part is the fixed fee charged by the Disclosure and Barring Service. This fee remains the same no matter how many applications are submitted. The cost is £21.50 for a Standard check and £49.50 for an Enhanced DBS check, including those with the Adults’ and/or Children’s Barred Lists.
The second part is the administration fee charged by the Umbrella Body for managing the application. This fee varies depending on the volume of checks being processed. At EasyDBS, administration fees start from £4.00 per application.
The total DBS Check cost is made up of these two elements combined.
Do Employers or Employees pay for DBS Checks?
There are no fixed rules about who should pay for DBS checks in employment. Each employer decides whether they will cover the cost or ask the employee to pay.
EasyDBS offers a feature that lets employers assign the cost of the DBS check directly to the applicant. This allows the applicant to pay through their own platform login, eliminating the need for the employer to pay upfront and then reclaim the expense.
My employees pay for their DBS, can you charge them directly?
Yes!
One of our unique features is that you can allocate the invoice directly to your Applicant.
They are then notified, and have to log into their own side of the platform to pay.
This negates the need for Organisations to pay and then recover the payment.
Can I buy credits?
Yes, there is a prepaid credit option available.
This is particularly helpful when staff need to submit DBS checks but do not have access to company finance systems.
Do Volunteers get a free DBS?
If you’re volunteering in the UK and need a DBS check for an unpaid role, the DBS Check Cost for you can be significantly lower — or even free — compared to paid staff. Volunteers who meet the official DBS definition are exempt from the government fee for both Standard and Enhanced DBS checks.
To qualify as a volunteer under the DBS criteria, you must:
Be in an unpaid role, receiving no payment other than approved out-of-pocket expenses.
Not be undertaking a placement, internship, or training scheme where you gain a qualification or professional benefit.
Not receive any other form of benefit in kind or financial gain from the role.
If you meet these requirements, the DBS Check Cost charged by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) itself is £0 for Standard and Enhanced checks. However, it’s important to note that while the DBS waives its official fee for volunteers, your organisation or the umbrella body processing your application may still charge a small administration fee to cover their time and costs. This admin charge varies depending on the organisation, so it’s a good idea to confirm before applying.
On the other hand, a Basic DBS check — which is a lower-level check — is not free for volunteers. The DBS Check Cost for a Basic check remains the same for everyone, whether you’re a volunteer or paid employee, because the government exemption does not apply to Basic checks.
Does VAT Apply to a DBS Check?
The base fee of the DBS Check cost is exempt from VAT, so no VAT is applied to that amount.
However, the administration fee charged by umbrella organisations is subject to VAT.
Invoices will clearly separate these two fees and show the VAT applied, making it easy to understand.
Can I get a bulk discount on DBS Check cost?
The DBS base fee, twenty one pounds fifty for a Standard DBS check and forty nine pounds fifty for an Enhanced DBS check, is set by the Disclosure and Barring Service and cannot be discounted. Even organisations processing hundreds of thousands of checks each year pay the same price.
The administration fee charged by EasyDBS is subject to volume discounts. We offer our most competitive rates to businesses that are likely to use our services over an extended period.
Can I pay extra for a fast track DBS Check?
There is no fast track service available for DBS checks. The Disclosure and Barring Service processes all applications using the same standard procedure.
Once an application has been submitted to the Disclosure and Barring Service, neither EasyDBS nor any other Umbrella Body can influence how quickly it is completed. However, what can be done is to make the process as efficient as possible. EasyDBS helps by providing a user-friendly platform that reduces applicant errors and makes the application process clear and straightforward.
